lake superior ice stacking feb 13 2016

lake superior put on a dramatic show with her recent ice in duluth minnesota while shooting in canal park i noticed the ice had pulled away from shore and felt the breeze at my back i anticipated there would be some ice stacking as the massive sheets of ice met the rugged shorelines so i headed to brighton beach the big lake did not disappoint the seemingly endless ice sheets broke into large plates and stacked on shore sounding much like breaking glass the ice thickness ranged from about 14quot to about 3quot thick the sights and sounds were incredible as the water became exposed the sea smoke was whisked across the surface by the breeze the sparkles visible in some segments were from the sun gilding the frost flowers that had formed on top of the new ice overnight -- icing on the cake i am in awe and mesmerized by ice stacking and waves and spent hours immersed in the sights and sounds of one of my favorite winter occurrences despite the subzero temps and frigid breeze i hope you enjoy this glimpse into an incredible experience along the shores of gitche gumee four hours of 12-15 mph steady winds from the sw led to the movement of the large sheets of ice on lake superior the conditions during the two hours of filming ranged from -8f to 3f air temp -20f to -8f windchill with winds 5-10 mph from the sw due to the mild winter lake superior has experienced less ice cover than usual and consequently the ice has not gotten as thick as typical winters weather data courtesy of the national weather service in duluththank you for continuing to follow and support our photography we look forward to sharing more inspirations from nature with you see more at wwwradiantspiritgallerycom dawn m lapointe radiant spirit gallery all rights reserved this video is being managed exclusively by newsflare to use this video for broadcast or in a commercial player go to: http:wwwnewsflarecomvideo62731otherlake-superior-ice-stacking-feb-13-2016 or email: newsdesknewsflarecom or call: 44 0 8432 895 191

3 reasons not to stack rocks in wilderness areas

rock stacking has exploded in popularity in recent years due largely to social media however many people fail to realise this is akin to environmental graffiti so in this video we talk about 3 reasons people should not stack rocks in wilderness areas1 rock stacking is irresponsible long before balancing stones became trendy park rangers and game wardens built stone cairns as markers to keep people from getting lost when people stack stones everywhere suddenly the one marking an important bend in the track looses its meaning which could lead to someone getting lost2 rock stacking is inconsiderate millions of people around the world venture into wilderness areas to escape civilisation and experience untouched environments in the eyes on many people seeing man made stone cairns everywhere they go is no different to finding people have graffitied a cliff face with spray paint or left litter lying around as such the act of balancing stones can actually impede on other peoples a

primitive technology: reusable charcoal mound

turn on captions for written commentary cc in bottom right corner of screen charcoal is a valuable fuel that reaches a higher temperature than the very wood its made from ive made some before but with supplies running low due to furnace experiments i decided to make another large batch of charcoal in a mound i stacked the wood into a roughly conical shape about 1 m wide and 75 cm high and then built a thick wall of mud around the heap this took 6 hours eight air entries were made in the base of the mound and one air exit hole was left at the top of the mound to allow the volatile components of the wood to escape while creating a natural draft to keep everything burning the mound was lit and the flame burned backwards down the heap in the opposite direction to the draft this protects the coal made above the level of the fire from burning as carbon dioxide rushes past instead of oxygen preventing combustion of charcoal each air entry was sealed only when fire became visible through them
